Traverse City has possibly the greatest location in the Midwest for a whitewater park to be developed. Engineers inspected our area in the spring of 2009 and stated that by building a park between Union and Cass Streets Traverse City would have one of the greatest "park and play" lifestyles in the Midwest. Traverse City's Union St. dam is in need of restructuring. It is a faltering dam. Do we want another dam replacement or a new recreation park? A park could benefit TC by providing many new qualities such as: esthetic improvement, vitality of flowing water for onlookers, new paddlesport possibilities, , community access to the river, new green spaces, educational venues, improved fishing with a potentially extended salmon/ trout fishery up to the head of the rapids. Imagine, prime fly fishing in town . The new park will be safer than the existing dam. No more liability is presented with a whitewater park than the beach. Tubers, swimmer and all water lovers will be able to use the river. Boardman Lake levels would remain the same.
