More about Tedeschi Family Winery

The Tedeschi family has been in the Napa Valley for several generations. Eugene Tedeschi planted the first grapes on their Calistoga property in the 1960s. Today, Emil Tedeschi produces hand-crafted wines in the tradition of his Italian heritage.

In 1919 the first generation of the Tedeschi family emigrated from Italy to Providence, Rhode Island. Shortly after they moved to California they started their first company, assisting with the lettering and pin striping for the Wells Fargo stagecoaches. Later that year, the family moved to Calistoga, a small town in the northern Napa Valley.

Eugene Tedeschi purchased property in the 1950s on the outskirts of Calistoga. When he purchased it, there were acres of various fruit trees, including apples and persimmons. To savor the beauty, he planted his grapevines between the trees, planting rows of grapes intertwined with the diverse fruit trees. He planted many varieties of grapes including Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel and Petite Sirah.

Eugene's son Emil moved to Hawaii in 1974 to co-found a new vineyard and winery, Tedeschi Vineyards in Maui, which has become one of the most famous wineries in Hawaii. The Tedeschi family moved back to the Napa Valley in 1991 with the dream of redeveloping Eugene’s vineyards in Calistoga and starting up their own small-scale winery.

Today, Emil Tedeschi is back managing the same property his forefathers owned. The Calistoga winery has become the passion and single focus of Emil’s two sons Emilio and Mario, along with a very interested daughter, Elaine. Together, with Emilio acting as General Manager and Mario making the wine, they have sought out and committed to handcrafting old-world style wines from several small and neighboring vineyards to produce Merlot, Pinot Noir, Petite Sirah, Primitivo, Malbec, Tempranillo, Chardonnay, Viognier, Rosé of Gamay, and a Late Harvest wine of Sauvignon Blanc.
