Operation Lifesaver started as a community rail safety campaign in 1972 by railroad employees. At that time there were about 12,000 incidents at US Highway-railgrade crossings.
Within a decade it spread across the country. In 1986 a national OL office was created to support state OL programs.
Our programs are co-sponsored by federal, state, and local government agencies.
Together we promote the three "E's"-- education, engineering and enforcement to keep people safe around the tracks and railway crossings in our communities.
