The American Institute of Alternative Medicine (AIAM) was established by Helen Yee and Diane Sater, who had a vision of creating an alternative medicine school that focused on the philosophy of holistic remedies and health education.

Alternative medicine philosophies originate from centuries of use in other cultures. Holistic treatment focuses on the whole person and treating the cause of the problem, not just the symptom. Every year in the United States, millions of people find relief and healing through the natural treatment approaches of alternative medicine and natural therapies. Below you can find the history of alternative medicine education at AIAM.

Timeline

1990 – Yee and Sater founded Massage Away Inc., which quickly became the largest therapeutic clinic in Columbus, Ohio. The massage clinic's consistent growth, overwhelming customer demand and the challenges of finding quality massage therapists inspired Yee and Sater to start a new venture.

1994 – The Massage Away Inc. School of Therapy began with a class of 14 in a Western Massage Therapy program.

2000 – The Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges (ACCSC, formerly ACCSCT) granted full institutional accreditation.

2002 – The name changed to American Institute of Alternative Medicine, and we added two new programs – Chinese Massage Therapy and Acupuncture – to reflect our broader mission.

2004 – The Accreditation Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (ACAOM) granted candidacy for the Acupuncture program, which allows Acupuncture graduates to sit for their national certification exam.

2007 – AIAM's Professional Master's Level Acupuncture Program was recognized by ACAOM with full accreditation. ACAOM is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as the accrediting agency for the approval of programs preparing Acupuncture and Oriental medicine practitioners.

2010 – We introduced three new programs, all developed with a blend of holistic and Western Medical philosophy: Practical Nursing (PN), Registered Nursing (RN) and Medical Assisting (MA).

2013 – AIAM's School of Nursing added a Direct Entry option to the Registered Nursing Program, allowing those with no previous nursing experience to start directly into a 24-month Registered Nursing curriculum while retaining the Advanced Placement option for graduates of an approved Practical Nursing Program.

The American Institute of Alternative Medicine is regarded as one of the top holistic medicine schools in Columbus, Ohio. We continue to grow and evolve, with 266 students in 4 programs and more than 1,600 alumni practicing across the United States, Europe and Asia.
