The Awakenings Foundation

The Awakenings Foundation was officially incorporated as an Illinois non-profit in July, 2010, but its roots go back to 1998, when Jean Cozier, Founder, created the Judith Dawn Memorial Fund for the Arts.

In 2008 and 2009, Jean created and co-hosted a series of “Art of Survival” events to showcase the talents of rape and sexual abuse survivors who were artists, writers, and musicians. At the same time, applications to the Judith Dawn Fund reached a peak, many from working artists, musicians, and writers. With so many outstanding applicants to the program, Jean realized there was a need to create a permanent home for artists/survivors who could share their works with the public.

In addition to Awakening's grant program, the gallery offers other programs such as open art-making nights in partnership with Rape Victim Advocates, musical concerts, a literary magazine, rotating art exhibitions, and more.
