More about The Barn, Trapold Farms, Inc.

The Barn is the retail end of Trapold Farms, Inc, a 3rd generation family owned & operated farm that's been a Portland icon since the early 1940's.

The Trapold's started custom farming for others as they slowly started acquiring small pieces of land along the Columbia River just east of the Portland airport. The roadside stand known locally as "The Barn" was originally just that, with dirt floors. As the public happened by they would see the family out harvesting produce from their fields and stop to purchase some.

The past 60 years have brought much growth and change to The Barn and the Trapold family. Industry has caused the family to move the farming part of the operation out to the coveted farmland of Sauvie Island. The Barn’s fruit & vegetables are grown adjacent to the confluence of the Columbia & Willamette Rivers where the rich soil, clean air and protected zoning provide for optimal growing conditions. Here we pursue environmentally safe farming practices and good land-stewardship.

The Barn remains a popular destination for locals and out-of state consumers. Generations of families have relied on us for their hand-harvested fruits & vegetables picked fresh daily. We open right after Memorial Day with strawberries, rhubarb, asparagus and all your early salad fixings as well as beautiful hanging baskets, annuals and bedding plants from our own greenhouses. From early June the season comes into full swing with berries, cherries and every other fruit & vegetable you could want for your eating and preserving desires.

If we don't grow it, we get it, from our neighboring farmers to assure it's local freshness and flavor.

Our own super sweet corn in yellow, white and bi-color is a mouth-watering favorite. The pickling season brings the highly sought-after cucumbers and all the ingredients you need to make pickles, including the recipes!

As the summer wanes, you feel fall in the air and look forward to sampling the many varieties of pears and apples we carry from our growers in the Hood River Valley. We're also famous for our huge heads of kraut cabbage (even the annual Verboort Sausage & Sauerkraut festival uses our cabbage), Brussels sprouts on their stalks, and over 25 varieties of hard-shell winter squash that can also be found in stores throughout the Pacific Northwest and Alaska.

For your decorating needs we have tons of pumpkins (many varieties & sizes), corn stalks, straw, gourds, ornamental corn and much more. Just before we close for the season at Thanksgiving, stock up on your winter potatoes and anything else you may need to make it through until we open again the following June.

We also offer a full line of canning jars & accessories along with a good selection of local honey, jams, sauces and pickled items.

From our family's fields to your family's table, come by and see us for the best produce around.
