The Barrel of Fun Ice Cream

History:

After a plant closing offered a business class for those losing their jobs, Owner/Operator Mark Beam decided he wanted to open his own business. The plant environment wasn't working. Due to what was felt to be a low overhead business, Mark and wife, Lisa, decided to open an ice cream store. Barrel of Fun Ice Cream (The Barrel) was established in Louisville, Kentucky, Spring 1994.

A stand-alone building was purchased, red and white striped barrel, as an eye catcher. It took approx. 6-12 months to renovate the barrel and have it moved to a park like setting on Smyrna Parkway in Okolona. Additional space was added to support the necessary building requirements as well as dipping cabinets and equipment for food items.

In the beginning, The Barrel only served hand-dipped ice cream and a few food items. Through the years additional items and space have been added to incorporate soft serve ice cream as well as other "Treats you Deserve". Today, 2011, Mark and Lisa remain Owner/Operators but have added family members and staff to help run the seasonal business. Where once maybe 1-2 employees could have served the nightly crowd, we need at least 4-5 now.

In 2012, we hope to have a little different Barrel of Fun. Current plans are to expand the outdoor space and offer a few more menu items. Possibly offer some party packages. It is a great gathering place for family and friends to have that cold dessert on a warm summer night.
