The Bob Hope School Scholarship Golf Tournament

In 2009 the Texas Education Agency awarded the Hughen Center a charter to operate a public, open-enrollment charter school. This school was named the Bob Hope School in memory of the great entertainer and Hughen Center benefactor. Over the past six years, our school has done remarkably well, surpassing all area schools on state assessments, enrolling over seventy percent of our graduates into college, while having a zero percent dropout rate.
As you probably recall, the Hughen Center previously sponsored golf tournaments to benefit the physically challenged youth at our center. Bob Hope and Bum Phillips visited Port Arthur to host these tournaments. This program is no longer in existence, but we are now moving to support the Bob Hope Charter School graduates with college scholarships by hosting our first annual golf tournament.
Our school is located in the heart of a low income area. We provide parents with a free choice in their children’s education that offers them opportunities they might not get if our school was not in existence. You can read about some of our students’ and teachers’ achievements in the attachments to this letter.
Over 90% of our students will be the first generation in their family to attend college. We are confident that they are prepared to attend college successfully. They are excited and ready for this next step in their lives. But they do face a financial barrier. As you are probably well aware, college is expensive, and college expenses are a real impediment for low income families. It is our hope that you will extend the generosity you have shown to our clients in the past to our students now.
