More about The Chaz House

In a State with so many incredible places to paddle, Florida’s Nature Coast definitely is one of the top choices for those seeking a mix of watery adventures. From clear, freshwater springs to saltwater tidal creeks, we’ve got so much variety right at our doorstep.

Of course, the Chassahowitzka River is well known locally for its scenic beauty and swimming holes so cool that they shock the body a little when you first jump in. A lot of folks believe that to become a true Floridian, you have to spend some of your summer days cooling off in a spring, preferably one that has a rope swing. It’s a time-honored tradition shared by so many of us that grew up near these precious gems.

If you haven’t been out on the Chaz in a while, go check things out. Thanks to the recent restoration project, the water clarity has improved considerably, especially around the headsprings.chazriver

On a recent paddle trip, I saw otters, snakes, blooming Spider Lilies and Bartram’s Airplants, orchids and Swallow-tailed Kites circling overhead. People count? Four — two in a tandem kayak, one kayak fisherman and one boater. Of course, it’s best to go on a weekday to maximize the feeling of solitude as well as wildlife viewing opportunities. If you are just out for some exercise, and go on a weekend, be prepared to spend time in the company of others enjoying the River.

I’m always torn when I share some of my favorite places around the state. Some say that spreading the word about these places spoils the experience for others. I say it helps people fall in love with Florida and as a result become a defender of the natural beauty we have. As far as the Chassahowitzka goes, I believe it only takes about two hours for a person to completely fall head over heels for our natural wonders.

Why two hours? That’s about the time it takes to paddle out to Seven Sisters Spring, down Crab Creek, down Baird Creek and to The Crack. Take that short trip, and tell me that Florida isn’t one of the most beautiful places anywhere.

If you don’t have a boat, the Chassahowitzka Campground store at the boat ramp can hook you up with a rental. They have a nice selection of kayaks and canoes and the rates are reasonable. See? Now there’s no excuse. There’s even a link on this website.

Make sure to get you and your family out on the Chaz this summer. See you on the water.
