More about The City of Redding

The City of Redding is the county seat of Shasta County and sits at the north end of the Sacramento Valley on Interstate 5, equidistant between Seattle and Los Angeles. Redding is the largest city north of Sacramento and, as such, is the center of trade and commerce in the upstate region of northern California. As of January 1, 2015, Redding had a population of 91,110 in a countywide population of 178,673.

The Sacramento River runs through the center of the city. With Shasta Dam and Shasta Lake on the north side of Redding, Whiskeytown Lake on the west side, and peripheral access to Mt. Shasta, Lassen Peak, and the Trinity Alps, Redding has become a center for tourism and recreational activities. The iconic Sundial Bridge, which was designed by world-renowned architectural designer Santiago Calatrava, was built in the center of the city and draws both locals and tourists. It functions as a pedestrian bridge, crossing the Sacramento River and connecting the north and south ends of the Turtle Bay Exploration Park.

The City of Redding is also a hub for regional transportation, with four main highways, a daily passenger airline serving the Redding Municipal Airport, and daily service by rail, bus, and truck lines. Redding has a solid educational system, with 41 elementary schools, 8 middle schools, 15 high schools, 11 charter schools, several private schools, and 4 colleges and universities.

Employment is centered in the service, government, and retail industries. Redding is actively engaged in economic development programs to retain and expand existing businesses and draw new businesses and industries.
