The Dearborn Academy

The Dearborn Academy is a Pre-K to 8th Grade public charter school academy located in the city of Dearborn and county of Wayne.

The Dearborn Academy is proud to serve the Dearborn community and surrounding areas. Charter authorization was received from Central Michigan University-The Governor Engler Center for Charter Schools Board of Truestees in 1997.

The Dearborn Academy was established with the specific purpose of serving the diverse needs of the Dearborn community and surrounding areas, which host a population of approximately 98,153 residents. This population is comprised of individuals and families from various cultures, races, and ethnic groups.

Dearborn is the eighth largest city in the State of Michigan. The city was the home of Henry Ford and is home to the world headquarters of the Ford Motor Company, as well as, the United States' largest indoor/outdoor museum and the leading tourist attraction of Metro-Detroit; The Henry Ford Musuem/Greenfield Village.

Dearborn residents are primarily of European or Middle Eastern heritage, descendants of 19th and 20th-century immigrants. German, Polish, Irish and Italian are the primary European ethnicities. Middle Eastern ancestries make up the largest ethnic grouping with Lebanese, Yemeni, Iraqi, Syrian and Palestinian groups present.

The Dearborn Academy also serves students from 9 surrounding districts in the Metropolitan Detroit area. While the majority of the students are Detroit residents (86%), eight percent (8%) are residents of Dearborn, and four percent (4%) are residents of Dearborn Heights.

The Dearborn Academy also serves families from the following nearby cities; Wayne-Westland, Inkster, Redford Charter Township, Oak Park, Lincoln Park, and River Rouge.

A large percentage of students who attend The Dearborn Academy are of Middle-Eastern descent. A large number of students who enroll at the Academy are recent immigrants. Often these immigrants do not speak English. As a result, the Academy strives to communicate with parents in their native language to encourage and maintain an open line of communication with families attending the school.

The professional learning community at The Dearborn Academy is committed to using the best available resources, assessments, and data to drive the curriculum, and to monitor each students' proficiency in every essential skill. Staff and administration at The Dearborn Academy function as a team and respond instantaneously to students who are in need of intervention or special services.
