More about The Hamlin Mansion

Now and then you may come across a school that occupies a mansion, but only the Hamlin School has a Pacific Heights address with a spectacular panoramic view of the Golden Gate and San Francisco Bay.
The mansion in this case is Stanwood Hall, one of three buildings that make up the school. Designed by Julius Kraft, the 24-room house was constructed in 1901 for James Leary Flood, son of the Nevada silver king, and was part of the last wave of mansion building in The City. Its Italian Baroque exterior is distinguished by Ionic columns, pilasters and pedimented windows arranged in formal symmetry, characteristic of the early 1900s Revival style that succeeded the late Victorians.
Granite steps, flanked by two gray marble lions (nicknamed Leo and Leona by Hamlin students), lead to a mosaic and marble vestibule and a pair of oak-and-plate-glass doors. Beyond the vestibule is the two-story Great Hall, a space with columns and wall-to-wall oak paneling that’s practically custom-made for ceremonies. The bride makes her entrance by walking down a magnificent staircase, illuminated by a large art glass window with four chipped glass “jewels” embedded in it. Guests are seated throughout the hall, and there’s room on the balcony above for an additional group of onlookers.
Cocktails are usually served after the ceremony, giving guests an opportunity to explore the entire house, upstairs and down. Directly beyond the Great Hall is the Library, a warm room with a dark mahogany-paneled interior, striking black marble and gold fireplace and great bay views. Note the carved wood garland over the doorway as you enter. In contrast to the Library is the adjacent Solarium. This mosaic-and-glass space, filled with light and capped by three small Tiffany glass cupolas, also overlooks the bay and Marin County. Upstairs, there’s a mezzanine that overlooks the Great Hall.
Receptions are held on the level below the main floor in the new Dining Area, whose East and West Dining Rooms can be reserved individually or combined for large parties. The décor is simple, yet elegant, with ivory walls and maple floors. Large windows provide bay views and natural light during the day, while wall sconces cast soft light at night. If you’d like a more romantic ambiance, candles are permitted.
For over a century, the Hamlin Mansion has impressed all who enter its doors with its classic lines and rich appointments. You’ll find that these qualities also make it a wonderful place for an upscale wedding, party or corporate event.
