Thr Henry Timrod Library had its beginning as a reading circle organized in 1897 by a small group of Summerville book lovers. The Library received its charter as a pay library on April 23,1908. The facility on Central Avenue is the original permanent home opened on April 15, 1915. Construction of this facility was made possible through the generosity of the town of Summerville and local businesses.
The Timrod is located in Summerville's historic district which is listed on the National Register of the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
The building houses a valuable collection of books ranging from First Editions to a creditable collection on South Carolina as well as reference material, the latest best sellers and an extensive children's collection including Newberry and Cledecott Award winners.
One of the only two subscription libraries remaining in South carolina, the Timrod is funded entirely through memberships and gifts.
Family memberships are fifteen dollars per year.
The library has continued to thrive as a result of the dedication, hard work, determination and generosity of its patrons and of the Summerville business community.
