A Montessori Story:

Little Sally is three-years-old and has been attending a traditional daycare/preschool since birth. She loves playing with dolls and blocks but sometimes longs for new things to do. There are often special activities, like art projects, and although she tries her hardest to do the steps exactly like her teacher shows her so the outcome will be perfect, it never turns out exactly right.

On Mondays Sally gets to learn a new color; on Tuesdays there’s a new number; Wednesday bring a new letter; Thursdays a new animal is introduces and on Friday’s it’s free time to simply play, play, play.

Although Sally loves her teachers, friends and activities, she sometimes feels bored or uninspired. Sally already knows her numbers 0-20 so she wishes she could learn what comes next. She has a hard time remembering the letter each week but knows she’ll get another chance to learn it next year, when she moves to the four-year-old classroom. One of her favorite activities is art but she doesn’t understand why she has to make a jack-o-lantern exactly like her friends. She also feels frustrated when she can’t complete an activity because it’s time to rotate through centers.

What Sally and her parents may not know is that there is an option for young children that will allow Sally to freely explore activities that will foster independence, one in which she can continue to grow as she masters skills and new knowledge, and one that will help instill a life-long love for learning! That system is called Montessori!

Students are shown how to use materials; however they are then free to explore them as ineptly as they wish and move on once mastered. Montessori takes into consideration the “whole” child and understands that no two children learn the same way or at the same rate. Montessori is a different approach to education, allowing children to grow at his/her own rate helping foster a love for learning!
