The Independence Academy

Student Body
IA serves middle school, junior high and high school students in Grades 5-12 with high-functioning autism/Asperger Syndrome.

Environment
IA has small class sizes with a 6 to 1 student/teacher ratio that is welcoming, accepting and affirms the individuality of our unique students. In addition to teachers, there are aids and volunteers who assist in the classrooms.

Academics
The classes are challenging and support our students' unique learning styles and needs. The curriculum is approved by the state. The Independence Academy offers accredited diplomas.

Sensory Supports
Students are encouraged to find and develop their own sensory supports that can be used both in and outside of school. The school provides fidgets, sensory rooms and breaks, and other sensory items to help the students discover what works best for them.

Life and Social Skills
Life and social skills development is incorporated in all classes throughout the day. In addition, a daily life skills class provides instruction in targeted areas. Students also participate in monthly field trips where life and social skills are put to practical use.

Activity
Students need to be active. A daily snack time and outdoor walk is incorporated into the morning routine. Students also go outside for an exercise period after lunch. An extended physical activity period is added one day a week.

Accreditation
The Independence Academy is accredited by the State of Indiana and is required to offer state mandated testing. Speech and occupational therapy services are provided by Indianapolis Public Schools.
