The term gastropub, a portmanteau of gastronomy and pub, originated in the United Kingdom in 1991 to describe a drinking establishment that focuses on serving not only drinks but also high quality food. The Kraken Gastropub is the first bar or restaurant in Columbia, South Carolina to identify itself as a gastropub. With 30 beers on tap, The Kraken Gasropub is believed to have the largest draught beer selection in town among bars and restaurants that are locally owned and not a part of a chain or corporation.
