More about Lincoln Theatre in Marion, Virginia

The Lincoln Theatre originally opened July 1, 1929 operating as the premier movie house in Southwest Virginia, thousands of motion pictures flashed across the screen during its 44 years of operation before its closing in December of 1973. It reopened for a short time during the mid-70’s but could not stay afloat on the few customers it had, because of this the building and its systems fell into disrepair. The theatre closed its doors again on August 28, 1977.
By the late 1970’s The Lincoln Theatre Foundation had obtained the building with hopes of preserving, which sat neglected until the 1990’s when the effort to preserve the theatre was revived and more than $1.8 million was raised. A local firm and hundreds of volunteers came to the aid of the dilapidated theatre. They transformed the abandoned movie house into the finest show place in Southwest Virginia by adding a state-of-the-art sound-and-lighting system, dressing rooms, rehearsal space, and expanding the stage.
The Lincoln Theatre reopened its historic doors on May 16, 2004 with a performance by Riders in the Sky. The Lincoln Theatre offers year-round events and is available as a venue to touring companies, performance groups, and individual artists. As the theatre stands today it is one of only three existing Art Deco Mayan Revival theatres and is on the National Register of Historic Places and is a Virginia Historic Landmark.
