More about The Orthopaedic & Spine Institute

Welcome to The Orthopaedic and Spine Institute.
The Orthopaedic and Spine Institute is located in the heart of the South Texas Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas. We are a team of physicians, surgeons and practitioners working together to bring you unparalleled healing and wellness using the latest cutting edge technologies and procedures as well as traditional options that have stood the test of time.

Our top-notch clinicians consist of The Orthopaedic and Spine Institute President and founder, Steven J. Cyr, M.D., a Mayo Clinic fellowship trained Orthopedic/Neurological spine surgeon, pain management physicians, a licensed physical therapist, physician assistants, and a neurologist. All practitioners are board certified. The Orthopaedic and Spine Institute has gained a reputation of excellence in Texas and abroad. Our staff is experienced at isolating the source of pain and accurately diagnosing and treating symptoms and conditions using both non-operative and operative means. We strive to create Medical Centers of Excellence to treat the whole patient from the onset of pain to post-surgical rehabilitation.

The philosophy of The Orthopaedic and Spine Institute is to seek conservative, non-surgical solutions for a patient’s muscular or skeletal problem. Our team of specialist collaborate to arrive at the proper diagnosis and treatment options. If non-surgical treatment fails to provide significant pain relief and surgery is required, our patients benefit from surgical procedures provided by a world-class surgeon. Our spine surgeon, Dr. Steven J. Cyr, trained at the prestigious Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. The Mayo clinic spine fellowship is a combined fellowship providing both neurosurgical and orthopaedic expertise to its fellows. Both the Neurosurgery and Orthopaedic departments have consistently been ranked number 1 in the country for the past 20 years. This unique approach provides patients with a level of care provided by few surgeons in the world. Dr. Cyr served in the United States Air Force as the Chief of Spine Surgery and Spine Surgery Consultant to the Surgeon General of the United States Air Force. Dr. Cyr was also an assistant professor to the orthopedic surgeons in residency at Wilford Hall and the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. This experience treating Level 1 trauma victims and combat injured Soldiers, Airmen, Sailors, and Marines during two tours in Iraq during Operation Enduring Freedom allowed him the opportunity to lend innovative techniques to the military. This led him to perform the first total disc replacement procedure as well as endoscopic spinal surgery in the Air Force in addition to surgery for cancer of the spine, revision surgeries for failed operations, and scoliosis surgery. He specializes in correcting complicated spine issues and has gained notoriety for successful repairs of failed surgeries on patients from numerous other states and around the world.

The Orthopaedic and Spine Institute defines success by the number of people who are able to live a better quality of life after receiving our care. We regularly perform advanced procedures that few other spine centers offer. We pride ourselves on treating our patients like family. The Orthopaedic and Spine Institute has become world renowned as a premier provider of spine surgery with success rates rarely seen elsewhere. We are excited to show you the OSI difference.
