The Papaya Lady

I created this page for my mom's fans and loyal customers, and of course new friends! She loves and appreciates every single one of you! Some of you were once teenagers carrying around a dollar, keeping a lookout for the big blue van, you are now mothers and have children of your own who eat papaya salad.

Somchanh Thongsavat is the original papaya lady of Merced, CA. She's been making/selling papaya salad for 26 years. She now operates at UC Oriental Market, open seven days a week. She also offers a noodle soup, delicious iced coffee, thai tea and tapioca dessert. Stop by and say hello!
