The impact that music and arts education has on a developing child is powerful. Research has show that it not only increases self-confidence but facilitates learning in other subjects, improves language development, increases IQ, improves spacial-temporal skills, and improves test scores.
Sadly, funds have been drastically cut in more than 80 percent of U.S. school districts since 2008 and the first programs to go are music and art. This means children are left without music and art classes in the school curriculum altogether, effecting children from low-income families disproportionately.
The Platform’s Music and Arts Program, nestled in the 1200 square feet classroom of Platform 1888’s state-of-the-art music venue, will launch in early 2016. Children who do not have the gift of music and arts education in or after school will be transported to the classroom to experience a 6-week music or arts program taught by paid and volunteer instructors and special guests musicians. Upon meeting completion requirements, the student will then have the opportunity to perform live on The Platform stage in front of a live audience comprised of supporters and family that made the experience possible. The instrument or art supplies will then be given to the student to continue their practice.
The Platform aims to provide music and art education to over 300 students in the San Diego area in 2016. For more information, visit our website at www.theplatformma.org.
