More about The Range Dice

"Being privileged enough to have the opportunity to give my opinion on a “new” piece of shooting gear I was extremely excited. When I saw that the creator of this product was stapling a different looking target to your typical range target stand I was a bit disappointed.
I thought I was going to get to try out a piece of new tacticool gear. But alas it was just a paper target.
But was it???
David began to explain the target layout and his system and slowly I began to think “ok, this could be cool after all”
Briefly, my background is not that of a professional gunfighter, I am a solid non-III%’er. I have however heard a few shots fired in anger a few years back in Afghanistan and I get to the range to do some kind of shooting at least 10 to 12 times a year. I wind up in the middle of the pack at the end of the day in my local IDPA/USPSA competitions.
So, what is this product? Well, it is an innovative new twist on punching holes in paper.
Instead of the target being a square or a circle or a silhouette what David has done is create a target of shapes, colors and numbers that makes you think before you shoot. Let me explain.
Normally you take some form of the above mentioned target to a range, you tack it to a stand and you shoot. You do your best to make tight groups you may even try your best to vary where and what you shoot but there is very little challenge because in your mind you know pretty much where you are going to place the next round.
Not so with David’s target system. The dice tell you what to shoot. And unless you have a photographic memory you have to discern which target to shoot and which not to shoot. David said it himself, “this target is for people who are tired of drawing and shooting center mass”
Now granted, there is nothing wrong with shooting center mass. However, if that’s all you do then you begin to lose the challenge of target acquisition. One of the interesting things I found out about David’s’ system is that my mind had been pre-trained to hit center mass. Center mass on ANY target. Big, small, splatter type, body shaped, any target. I always shot CBM. David’s target system asks that you shoot bull’s-eye on whatever target is picked by the roll of the dice AND more importantly, do not shoot those targets that aren’t supposed to be shot. His system creates doubt, indecision and requires discernment.
Looking at a target with one center and then shooting it can be hard. Finger position on the trigger, grip, sight alignment and what not all create a challenge for every shooter. Now factor in that you must pick between 6 different numbers, 6 different colors and 6 different shapes.
It may not sound hard but it is. I missed a lot! Why? Because you are constantly looking for the right target, eliminating the wrong target, and double checking yourself to see if you have it right. It is impossible to rely on mind/muscle memory to shoot the center of the target. There is no repetitive advantage of always shooting the same place over and over again. You are constantly challenged to find a target and shoot it. Why, because after every time you shoot, you roll a set of special dice and your target changes.
Now throw in a shot timer, movement, pistol/rifle transitions, mag changes and what you have now is one of the most difficult target shooting challenges a civilian can find without going to a SWAT school or building your own “shoot house”

In summary, for the cost of 50 rounds of ammo you can now have a target system that will challenge even the most seasoned shooter. Bring a friend or two to the range and this system is guaranteed to get your competitive juices flowing. Using this system in a shooting bay type range will have you wondering “why didn’t I think of that”
Just bring plenty of ammo and don’t get too upset when you look at your target and think “I know I can shoot better than that!”
