My career in sales began over 20 years ago although to be 100% accurate it really began when I was in elementary school making a small fortune selling gum and candy to all my fellow classmates. That career path quickly came to a grinding halt once faculty caught onto my business venture but not before subsidizing a pretty cool baseball card collection!

I credit my parents for instilling in me the hard work foundation and providing the freedom to live my own life and make my own mistakes. Like many, I went on to college but never really did get full clarity on what I wanted to do with the rest of my life. As a result, I did what most kids do in that situation and I ended up with a business degree.

Thankfully, right out of college I declined the advice of my best friend who was adamantly trying to steer me into a managerial role at a retail store versus taking the other offer I hand in hand for a sales job. Thankfully, I didn’t listen to him and chose the red pill accepting a commission’s only gig selling office systems. The blue pill would have been a total dead end; a larger competitor eventually gobbled that retail chain up.

Within a year I was the youngest sales manager at a large Fortune 500 knocking out a 6-figure plus salary right out of the gate. After 3 great years I learned of deeper more lucrative waters, so I opted to roll the dice and leave a great job. I jumped head first into high tech and definitely saw how far the rabbit hole really goes. To put it simply I hit a home run over the next two decades and picked a winning organization packed with the most amazing sales talent out there. I was exposed to the very best in terms of sales and sales management and made it a mission to learn something from everyone I know.

For those that know me, I am too humble to proclaim myself the GOAT (Greatest of all Time) but know with certainty that I can definitely bring it and make it happen year in and year out- without fail. I’ll share with you some great lessons learned as an individual contributor and sales leader.

My blog is my way of giving back and helping enable you to be the GOAT in whatever you do. Everyone in some form or fashion is in sales whether you like it or not, you might as well be great at it! Giving back is important, I’ve made it a point to be very active in the local community by joining an amazing board a few years back for a top global charitable organization.

We are going to go on an amazing journey together and take on a wide range of sales related topics. Selling covers a lot of ground so we will definitely have plenty to talk about. I am still in the throws of some of the fiercest fights but I will make it a point to commit to all of you and this blog with the same passion I do everything else in my life!

Long-term success in sales requires us being great in all parts of our lives. I’m blessed with a great wife and 2 awesome children who support and inspire me like no other.

So, you might ask other than the acronym, why the goat? As a young child growing up, I remember vividly visiting a farm and being enamored with all the cool animals. I innocently thought how awesome would it be to have a farm and especially that pet goat who wouldn’t leave my side. My 7-year-old son is also a dreamer with an imagination second to none. The goat for me is symbolic of dreaming big, working hard, and no matter what… making it happen!

In closing, I’ll give you 3 reasons why you will want to follow my blog:

Sales can’t be mastered solely by reading a book or a blog for that matter, it definitely helps but you need to get out there and make it happen and create your own experiences. I’ll share with you the best practices that made me and countless others successful. This won’t be about theory in an ivory tower, or some talking head, it will be the real deal and battle tested.
Great sales people crush it financially year in and year out; the difference in earnings between the good and the great is significant. I’m definitely an outlier and you can be too.

Being the GOAT in sales can make a positive difference in all aspects of your life. Don’t go at it alone, get the right mentors and coaches to motivate and help keep you on the right path to success.
