The Salvage Barn

The Salvage Barn, operated by the Friends of Historic Preservation (FHP), is a warehouse specializing in historic architectural building materials that are 50 years and older. All inventory items are donated, most of which are salvaged by our team of volunteers from homes slated for demolition in the Johnson County area. The Salvage Barn maintains a Tool Lending Library, accessible to FHP members, and offers workshops throughout the year that are open to the public.

The Salvage Barn has been part of Iowa City's landfill diversion program for over 20 years. In 2013, it diverted more than 80 tons of valuable and reusable material from the landfill.

While the Salvage Barn is open to the public, becoming a member of the Friends of Historic Preservation includes benefits such as:
- access to the Tool Library
- member-only sales the first weekend of the month
- access to the Salvage Barn during non-business hours by appointment
- free delivery of most items purchased at the Salvage Barn in the Iowa City area, and
- our quarterly newsletter, the Newel Post.
