The Uhuru Academy

The Uhuru Prep Academy is a Pre-K thru 12 private homeschool cooperative made up of families that believe that the most effective way to unlock a young Afrikan's potential is teach him/her how to look at the world through an Afrikan lense. Let's be clear, the Uhuru Academy does not exist as a "response" to systemic racism. Our school was born, and functions, out of the natural inclination of a community to educate their own children in a manner that will create opportunities, develop leadership, and foster success. Afrikan Centered Education is Empowerment Based Education in that it focuses on self discipline, effective communication, critical thinking, and creativity. We empower our students to not only learn viable skills, but how to use them for the uplift of their families and their communities.

We have developed a powerful curriculum that blends rhythmic learning with project based education and individualized skill building plans. Our reading and vocabulary program is highly advanced and very challenging. We believe that language mastery is a key component in preparing children for the world of work. Mathematically, we blend group problem solving activities with individualized work strategies. This way, students in similar peer groups are allowed to work with their peers, while also focusing on their individual development. Students that are more advanced won't be held back, and students that are challenged won't be rushed to keep up with anyone else. Scientifically, we focus heavily on finding practical solutions to every day challenges, i.e., food and water, caring for the environment, understanding nature, and the need for innovation. As far as social studies, government, and history, we take our students on a journey that begins in Ancient Afrika's Nile Valley, expands to all areas in the world, and ends in our classroom with the caption "to be continued by you". Our students learn about local, state, and national government, with special emphasis on local government and the decisions that are made daily that affect our lives. Our children learn that political power is achieved through economic and cultural power. Uhuru Academy Pharaohs engage in fun, yet rigorous, physical fitness activities that include basic calisthenics, strength and conditioning drills, self defense training, and more.

Most importantly, at the Uhuru Academy, we reinforce the ideals and values being taught to our students at home. You have a true partner in us as it pertains to the holistic development of your child. At the Uhuru Academy we respect your faith, and we create a safe space for your child to pay homage to the Creator and/or the Ancestors as taught to them at home.
