Theater at SUNY Broome

SUNY Broome theater started over 40 some years ago with one theater class. Now we have vibrant theater presence with a full spectrum of courses to give a student the foundation they need to transfer to a four year college or to go directly to work in the business in NYC, LA, etc. We have many graduates pursuing both avenues.

Since 2001 SUNY Broome theater has been run by Associate Professor Katherine Bacon who is also the Chair of Performing Arts. Posthumously, Professor Emeritus Angelo Zuccolo would be very proud of what is currently available as he started with one theater class many years ago. Now you can study with distinguished faculty who are seasoned professionals in their area of expertise. The actor training is Stanislavsky-based with exposure to Viewpoints and a wide spectrum of acting theory and practice.

SUNY Broome theater gives students a solid foundation in the study of acting but also in directing, stage managing, costuming, play writing, scenic design, set construction, sound and lighting design. Our productions in "The Angelo Zuccolo Little Theater" are noted for their high quality and ambitiousness, with an emphasis on the classics, rigorous training and devised performance.

We are proud that a number of our courses are attractive to many students. Particularly the Beginning Acting course under Professor Bacon's instruction now is popular with students from across the disciplines as it teaches that acting skills can be valuable for anyone. We have our region's premier set designer, Craig Saeger, teaching Stagecraft and playwright Jan Quackenbush on staff.
