More about Theatre Albany

Among the pecan groves and cotton fields of southwest Georgia, live theatre flourishes under the banner of Theatre Albany. This award-winning* organization has offered outstanding performances since its inception in 1932. Theatre Albany is celebrating 80 years as the oldest and one of the most highly regarded cultural organizations in the city of Albany.

Theatre Albany’s artistic mission is “to enrich the cultural atmosphere of greater Albany by producing and promoting quality live theater for all segments of the community. It is within the mission to entertain, enlighten, educate, and to provide opportunities for individual artists and to encourage a high level of community participation.”

Theatre Albany was formally chartered, as the Albany little Theatre, on March 3, 1933. The Albany Little Theatre began operations by gaining permission to use the Municipal Auditorium. In September 1934 the theatre opened in its new home on the second floor at the corner of South Jackson Street and Broad Avenue. After more than 30 years occupying several downtown sites, Theatre Albany acquired the home of Captain John A. Davis in 1964 for its permanent residence. This remarkable white columned antebellum treasure adapted well to its new role and, in 1980, it earned designation on the National Register of Historic Places.

Theatre Albany produces a diverse and wide-ranging bill of fare, including popular Broadway plays and musicals, classic dramas, contemporary plays, and even original works. For over 80 years Theatre Albany has been a source of entertainment for the entire Southwest Georgia region.
