In 1983, the school became a national historic landmark and is the alma mater of several prominent individuals: Current San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro; his twin brother, U.S. House of Representative Joaquin Castro; Former San Antonio Mayor and Current SAISD School Board President Ed Garza; Texas Senator Leticia Van De Putte; All American Football Players Tommy Nobis (of UT) and Kyle Rote (of SMU); Country Music Artist Holly Dunn; Executive Director and former anchor of PBS News Hour Jim Lehrer; San Antonio Broadcasters Greg Simmons (TV), Gina Galaviz (TV), and Steve Hahn (Radio); Maj. Gen. Alfred Valenzuela; 1996 Nobel Prize Chemist Robert Floyd Curl; the late philanthropist and founder of American Income Life Insurance Company Bernard Rapoport; and many others.
