More about Total Eclipse Weekend Columbia, SC

Columbia, S.C., is already known internationally as one of the top destinations in the world for viewing the total solar eclipse on August 21, 2017.

Throughout the long weekend of August 18-21, 2017, attractions, cultural institutions, hospitality and retail businesses in Columbia, S.C. -- the total solar eclipse capital of the East Coast -- will host more than 120 special eclipse-related events leading up to nature's grandest spectacle.

At 2:41 p.m. on August 21, 2017, viewers who have gathered in the greater Columbia, S.C., area will experience up to 2 minutes and 36 seconds of totality -- the longest period of 100% total eclipse for a metro area on the entire East Coast of the United States.

"For those who choose to experience this eclipse outside the path, a partial eclipse is all they will see. Even if the sun is 99.9% eclipsed for these observers, they will not experience the full, jaw-dropping, knee-buckling, emotionally-overloading, completely overwhelming spectacle that is totality.” - Dan McGlaun (a veteran of twelve total solar eclipses)

Total eclipses are extremely rare, extremely beautiful, and the bare-eye view of totality is absolutely unmistakable to anyone in the thin path.

As the global community of total eclipse enthusiasts can attest, there is nothing that can compare to the experience of witnessing a 100% total solar eclipse.

The last total solar eclipse observable from the mainland United States was in February 1979, but it was only visible from 5 states in the Northwest. The last time a total solar eclipse made a path across the continential U.S. was in 1918 -- and even then, it was not visible from South Carolina.

The next incidence of totality in the U.S. will not occur until 2024. Columbia, S.C., will not see another total solar eclipse until the year 2078. This is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Make your plans to be in the East Coast’s total solar eclipse capital -- Columbia, S.C. -- on August 21, 2017!

Note: Event submissions have closed. We are excited to feature more than 120 eclipse events across the Columbia, S.C. region!
