More about Town of Genoa, Nevada

Genoa was founded by pioneers and settlers in 1851.

In June of 1849, H.S. Beatie and his party camped on the banks of the Carson River. They learned from passing travelers that a heavy migration was expected through the area. They located a spot just about 1 mile north of Genoa and set up a lean-to and corrals for livestock. Beatie and company returned to Salt Lake City, Utah, for supplies and able men to man the trading post. In the spring of 1851, Colonel John Reese, Enoch Reese, H.S. Beatie and several others established a trading post in Genoa, on the spot where the Mormon Station Historic State Park is located today, thereby establishing Nevada’s first settlement.

Today, Genoa is a thriving small town community of about 200 residents within the town boundaries with an additional 400-500 residents in the immediate area. Genoa is located about 20 minutes south of Nevada’s Capitol, Carson City, about 25 minutes east of Lake Tahoe and a about an hour south of Reno.
