Triton High School is a traditional public high school which opened in October 1985, which currently houses 1,308 students in grades nine through twelve, and 126 instructional staff members. Located at 215 Maynard Lake Road in Erwin, North Carolina 28339, Triton is one of six high schools in the Harnett County School System, which includes 4 regular high schools grades 9-12, plus one alternative school and Harnett Early College located in Dunn, NC. The school gets students from the following feeder schools: Coats/Erwin Middle and Dunn Middle Schools. The telephone number is 910-897-8121. The school colors are dark blue and gray. The mascot is the hawk. According to the 2014-2015 statistical data, the Classroom Teacher FTE is 78.46 and the Student Teacher Ratio is 16.67.HistoryTriton High School serves the communities of Coats, Erwin and Dunn. Ground was broken for Triton High School in October 1983. Those present were Superintendent R. A. Gray, Harnett County Commissioners, and the three student council presidents of the schools that would serve Triton and they were: Dunn, Erwin, and Coats High Schools. Construction took a little over two years due to weather related issues. The doors of Triton opened to students in October 1985, with Leonard Arnold as the first principal. The school was officially dedicated in April 1986. He remained principal until 1992 when he was elevated to the position of Human Resources Director of Harnett County Schools following the retirement of Jerry R. Ennis. Arnold was followed as principal by Dan Curtis Honeycutt, then William Brooks Matthews and finally Chip Mangum at this current writing.Our students come from many different backgrounds but come mostly from urban and agriculture families. A large percentage of Triton's parents fall into the category of skilled workers. Several of our major employers include: Food Lion Distribution Center, Wal-Mart, Godwin Manufacturing Company, Betsy Johnson Regional Hospital and the Harnett County Schools System. Triton has around 110 churches near our attendance area to serve the religious and spiritual needs of the individuals. For our creative members, our county has Harnett Arts Council and Harnett Regional Theatre. All three of our towns have a public libraries, and recreation departments with one or more parks to use. Triton High School is within easy commuting distance of 13 higher learning institutions. Triton is located within 15 miles of three colleges and one university all located within Harnett County. Triton works in cooperation with Central Carolina Community College to make available college level classes both at Triton and on the campus of Central Carolina.
