Established in 1981 and managed by the City of Palm Bay, the Sanctuary offers a 1.85 mile boardwalk and 1.5 miles of hiking trails passing through hydric (wet) hammock, mesic (moist) hammock, and sand pine scrub communities, and 1.5 miles of jogging trails through native forest, both excellent for viewing a multitude of wild life. Within the Sanctuary, there is also a 1 mile mountain bike trail (rated difficult) with a direct connection to an additional 8 miles. This bike trail can be accessed on the east side of the Port Malabar Blvd. bridge over Turkey Creek. A canoe and kayak launch and picnic pavilion are also available on the east side of the sanctuary.

The on-site Margaret Hames Nature Center, opened in 1992, offers interpretive exhibits, nature library, and gift store.

Wildlife: Box turtle, alligator, eastern indigo snake, west Indian manatee, river otter, gopher tortoise, spotted skunk, raccoon, opossum, endangered Florida mouse. Listed in State of Florida Great Florida Birding Trail for warbler, osprey, duck, wading birds, and pileated woodpecker
