The Turtle River Watershed Association includes representatives from twelve different lakes. Each lake has at least one member on the board of 19. The watershed is the most northerly watershed within the Mississippi River Watershed and lies just south of the Continental Divide in Beltrami County.
With a membership of almost three hundred, the Turtle River Watershed Association has worked extensively towards maintaining and improving water quality throughout the watershed. Started by concerned people on Big Turtle Lake in 1998, the group decided to form as a watershed association rather than a single lake association to recognize the connectivity of the lake and river system. Through extensive volunteer effort, we have conducted broad water quality monitoring for over nine years to characterize water quality and develop a water management plan for the twelve member lakes and the main-stem Turtle River.
