UAMS - SW Family Medicine Residency Program

We, faculty members of UAMS Southwest Family Medicine Residency Program, like to call it a “Labor of Love.” We are often asked by our colleagues in the community why we do what we do. Quite frankly, I wouldn’t want to do anything else. Teaching young men and women how to be competent family physicians is really a lot of fun. Actually, we don’t teach them. We guide them in their learning. The patients teach them. To my physician friends in the community, it seems crazy but to us, it is a way a life that we choose and enjoy.

We invite you to look us over. We work in a hospital that was selected as one of the Top 100 Hospitals in America. We get the opportunity to care for patients in one of the busiest ERs. Actually, if the hospital were located one mile east of its present location, it would be the busiest ER in the state of Arkansas with almost 80,000 patients annually. Our inpatient medicine service is one of the most demanding and rewarding anywhere. Pediatrics, thanks to the very busy outpatient clinic affiliated and attached to our residency, gives our residents tremendous learning experiences. Sports Medicine, Care for the Aged, and Emergency Care are also strong at our residency.

But in the end, it is all about people. People and relationships make the world go ‘round and they are what make our residency program what it is today. The nurses, the residents, dedicated faculty, and all the other individuals that work with the residents are what is important. Without them, it would be just another residency program.
