UCSD Sixth College

Inaugurated at the dawn of a new century, Sixth College prepares our students to become dynamic and engaged citizens of the 21st century—innovative, creative and interconnected. Our core academic programs develop skills in both traditional and emergent media literacy, emphasizing essential writing fundamentals as well as the latest forms of digital communication.

In the Culture, Art and Technology sequence of courses, our students acquire innovative interdisciplinary approaches that they will need in a rapidly evolving world. Our Practicum is a unique upper-division requirement that promotes civic engagement and global consciousness, and embodies the College’s commitment to active, experiential learning. The Practicum provides a wonderful opportunity for students to integrate theory and practice by making connections between classroom learning and community experiences. Sixth College is also unique in offering an upper-division writing requirement, designed to assist students in preparing their professional portfolios and refining their presentation skills as they prepare to enter the post-graduate world. The themes of Culture, Art and Technology are built into all of our extra-curricular and residential programs, and reinforce our commitment to experiential learning.

Despite our young age, Sixth College has already established a rich and vibrant history of student activities, including Winter Gamefest (a weekend-long festival of computer gaming), Chocolate Festival (a day of gourmet delights), Spirit of the Masters (an artistic extravaganza), and Let It Flow (an evening of spoken slam poetry). Our Students Affairs and Residential Life staff members represent an outstanding and caring resource to promote student involvement and to cultivate a welcoming and diverse community. In all the student services we offer at the College—advising, counseling, and leadership training—the paramount aim is to provide a learning community that is nurturing and stimulating, while equipping our students to face the challenges that lie ahead.
