The Ecology Center is used by the University of Louisiana faculty and graduate students, members of the public, and local high schools. Projects involve the ecology of plants, fish, mammals, and invertebrates in coastal wetlands.Other researchers are looking at new techniques of rainfall estimation, wetland restoration, sediment deposition, and radioactive dating of soil cores. In partnership with the the University owned PureNative trademark, Ecology Center personnel grow native plants that once populated the coastal prairie. The seeds are then collected, stored, and distributed to farmers and conservationists. The ultimate goal of PureNative is to support a native seed industry in Louisiana with seed from plants adapted to local conditions. The Ecology Center has the facilities and equipment to support a variety of activities. These include a one-acre greenhouse, offices, labs, dormitory, conference area, two large walk-in coolers, and open-air fields with access to running water. Boats and some agricultural tools are also available. Tours and field trips are available by appointment.
