More about United Church of Clinton German Christmas Market

German Christmas markets date back to the 14th century. Originally, the fairs provided only food and practical supplies for the cold winter season, but soon the markets became a beloved holiday tradition and a great way to get into the Christmas spirit. Generally held in the town square and adjacent pedestrian zones, the market sells food, drink, and seasonal items from open-air stalls, accompanied by traditional singing and dancing. In large cities you find the market starting on the first weekend of Advent and closing down right after Christmas Eve. Smaller towns and communities stage their markets usually for one or two weekends during the season of Advent. Christmas markets are the perfect place to find a unique Christmas gift, such as handmade toys, Christmas ornaments and decorations, pottery, and other high quality crafts. And no visit to a German Christmas market is complete without sampling some Christmas treats as: “Glühwein”– hot mulled wine or cider, “Bratwurst” - charcoal-grilled sausages, “Stollen” - traditional German Christmas bread with dried fruits, nuts, spices, and sugar icing or “Lebkuchen” – gingerbread biscuits. Today for almost everybody in Germany it is an inherent part of the Christmas time to visit a Christmas Market to socialize with family and friends and get into the Christmas spirit.
