United Health Centers

United Health Centers began as an outgrowth of community organizing activities lead by Neighbors for Better Neighborhoods and six neighborhood associations in Southeastern Winston-Salem in 2003. Leaders from the Morningside, Southside, Waughtown Street, Easton, Flatrock, and Belview neighborhoods identified healthcare as a community need that is critical to a healthy neighborhood. Information shared by Robert Parker of WFUBMC on the community health center model galvanized the group to establish a steering committee. After incorporation the planning work continued with the board of directors and various community partners and volunteers helping along the way.

The vision of the people working to establish UHCs was to create a healthcare facility that supported the education and healing of local residents by paying close attention to culture and racial equity to improve health outcomes for patients.
