Willard, the dean of the Albert b. Chandler Medical Center, suggested a college of nursing. The UK College of Nursing was then founded in 1960. Marcia Dake, EdD, RN was the first dean of the college. Marcia was then joined with three other women to help teach the college. The first undergraduate class consisted of 35 women and they graduated in 1964. A Master of Science in Nursing program was added in 1969, followed by a PhD in nursing program in 1987. In 2001 the college established the nation's first Doctor of Nursing Practice program, which eventually led to a discontinuation of the masters program. Lastly, in 2010 the college celebrated its 50th anniversary.
