University of Michigan Cochlear Implant Program

The University of Michigan Cochlear Implant Program was established in 1984 and is one of the oldest programs in the country. We have restored hearing to more than 2,800 children and adults. Our center focuses on providing state of the art patient care and advanced research. We currently work with individuals utilizing Cochlear Americas, MedEl, and Advanced Bionics implant systems.

We are also fortunate to offer SOUND SUPPORT, an outreach program established in 2004. Sound Support is funded by a matching grant between the University of Michigan Department of Otolaryngology and Michigan Medicaid. The mission of this outreach program is twofold. First, the program aims to to improve the quality and timeliness of care for children who are deaf and hard of hearing, including diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of hearing loss. Second, we aim to reduce the cost associated with medical, social, and educational management of hearing impaired individuals as adults. Sound Support outreach is available to any child with hearing loss in the state of Michigan.
