UVA Language Commons

The A&S Language Lab opened in July of 2016. Using the SANS Virtuoso system, the Language Lab facilitates simultaneous recordings by individual students and groups, while also delivering a variety of synchronized media files to help students acquire increased proficiency in a target language and culture. There are 24 student computers connected to a central teacher station to support class activities, training sessions, and video conferencing events.

Michael Marsh-Soloway (mam7cd@virginia.edu) is the A&S Language Lab Coordinator, and he works closely with university language instructors to create and integrate digital resources to expand existing avenues for coursework and research. The lab provides an array of unique tools to stimulate effective linguistic pedagogy, and encourages students to develop personalized portfolios of individual and collaborative content to track their progress in learning a foreign language.
