Preschool and Early Elementary (beginning at 18 months and currently through grade 2)

Curriculum: Montessori + Balanced Literacy reading program + Lucy Calkins writing program

Preschool: At Village Montessori we offer a warm and friendly environment that blends the classic Montessori freedom of movement and choice with Maria Montessori's fundamental belief in fostering self-discipline. The method is child-directed learning at its best with attentive teachers that keenly observe each child's abilities and accomplishments on a daily basis. We allow the child to choose so that she can develop a sense of self-respect that propels her to learn, lead, and respect others around her. Children are sensorial learners so we prepare the environment with learning materials that they can feel, smell, hear and manipulate. They experience learning in a concrete way which lays the foundation for comprehending abstract ideas more easily later. Village Montessori strives to provide children with an enriched preschool experience in the areas of Practical Life, Sensorial and Music Enrichment, Mathematics, Culture and Science and Language Arts. Our enrichment program includes art, Spanish, religious studies (if desired), music and Veggiecation, which teaches children about vegetables, fruits and healthy eating. Children are encouraged to practice Social Graces and Courtesies on a daily basis. The program also includes a kindergarten readiness component for 4 and 5 year olds.

Elementary: Our elementary curriculum aligns with South Carolina's state standards and we utilize Balanced Literacy, Lucy Calkins, and Fountas and Pinnell for reading, writing and assessing, respectively. We have two certified teachers in our K-2 classrooms and a literacy specialist who provides literacy instruction and teacher training. Please stay tuned for news about our school's expansion plans!
