Coolville is located in Athens County about 20 minutes south of the city of Athens. Coolville was platted by Asahel Cooley in 1818, for who it is names and incorporated in 1835. In that year, citizens gathered at the schoolhouse to elect their first mayor. The 1875 Athens county atlas lists for Coolville at least six dealers in dry goods and groceries, a drug store, three doctors, a blacksmith, a photographer, an undertaker, one hotel, several carpenters, a shoe and boot manufacturer and many more businesses. US Route 50 ran on Main Street through Coolville as a brick road until the four-lane highway was built in 1963 and bypassed the town. The 2010 census records about 500 people live in Coolville.
