More about Virginia Railsplitters

Welcome to our official Facebook Page. I wanted to stir up our Network of friends to help make our fledgling volunteer organization a success. This organization is near and dear to my Father, Donald F. Liscomb's heart and has been a part of our lives as far back as we can remember.
In 1975, we held the First Annual Page County 'Woodchoppers Ball' where competitors came to take part in a woodcutters event which takes in many of the primitive arts of the wood lot. Railsplitting, woodchopping, crosscut sawing, log rolling, all in the old tradition of our ancestors. Some modern day skills such as chain sawing and nail driving have also become part of the competition since its inception.
Since then, we have hosted competitive events and demonstrations around Virginia to keep these skills and primitive arts revived, demonstrated and enjoyed by the public.
My father wrote to Virginia General Assembly requesting that our event be designated the Official State Championship Competition and it was agreed to by both the Senate and the House of Delegates in the spring of 1982.
Today we host regular events in February, May and September. These include The State Championships every year on President's Day Weekend in mid February, hosted at Fort Liscomb, Luray, VA. A demonstration at the Rassawek Spring Jubilee Heritage and Wine Festival in Goochland County, VA, and a demonstration at The Field Day of the Past, held in late September just outside Richmond, VA.
We are seeking new members, volunteers and participants for these events. Please feel free to share these updates with your friends and those who may be interested in woodsmen arts.
I would also like to ask that our current members please keep in contact about upcoming events and participate in fundraising and membership outreach.
