Originally a military outpost on the frontier, Fort Scott played a integral role in the settlement of the West and the mayhem of Bleeding Kansas. The Fort Scott National Historic Site is free to visitors and boasts many special events—from re-creations to candle-lit tours—throughout the year. The National Cemetery No. 1 is located nearby, and is a must-see for history buffs. There’s story behind every grave; Native Americans, Confederate troops, and Buffalo Soldiers have all found their final resting place at the Cemetery. The brand new Trolley takes visitors to both historic treasures, as well as over town to admire the stunning architecture of our preserved downtown and residential neighborhoods.
While Fort Scott is known for its history, we’re hardly living in the past. Stroll Main Street for unique boutiques, exceptional dining options, and the new Lowell Milken Center for Unsung Heroes!
