More about Wagoner Switch District Main Street

Wagoner is a lakeside community with rich history and an amazing downtown. Wagoner was the first town incorporated in Indian Territory in 1896. Our history includes several outlaws, such as Belle Star, the Dalton Gang and the Crittenden brothers. However, Wagoner also had the first public school that was privately funded by its citizens that was open to anyone who wanted to learn. These are the ideals that made Wagoner. Located in a cloud of dusty trails, Wagoner was rich in luxuries, having had several germicidal baths, an opera house and exquisite hotels. Wagoner is home to many large ornate brick buildings and trains. Wagoner was built by trains. The famous MKT (Katy), now Union Pacific, has run tracks in downtown Wagoner since 1871. Our downtown is large, consisting of 77 building/storefronts dating back to 1887, most of which are still intact.

Wagoner has a premium location at the intersection of highways of 69 and 51 and nestled snugly against Ft. Gibson Lake. We also have two resorts, each unique, to accommodate our guests. These combinations make Wagoner a destination and the possibilities are limitless. Right now, Wagoner Switch District has the opportunity to guide this growth and make a beautiful downtown as a center piece to a thriving community. Together, local groups are actively coming together to make improvements throughout the town. The citizens of Wagoner want to see a positive change.

For over 100 years Wagoner was a HUB of elegance and intellect, it is time to shine her up again. Nay, it is our duty to restore ourselves. Our downtown currently does not represent our citizens; we would all like to see our Main streets thriving once again. Wagoner was known as the Queen of the Prairie for a century because we have always shined brightly. We have the opportunity right now, to regain that status. With a lot of hard work and team effort we will fill every downtown location and help to improve the visual appeal of our surroundings. This is a big goal, considering how many vacancies we currently have. However, by working with other local groups Wagoner Switch District will not only create an aesthetically pleasing environment, but we will also create packages to entice business owners to locate in downtown Wagoner. By utilizing our committees and volunteers Wagoner Switch District will breathe life into downtown Wagoner.
