Ward is a town in Allegany County, New York, United States. The population was 368 at the 2010 census. The town was named after Hamilton Ward.The town is in the southeast quadrant of the county, north of the village of Wellsville.HistoryThe first settler arrived around 1817. The town of Ward was created in 1856 from parts of the towns of Alfred and Amity.The only significant community, Phillips Creek, was first settled between 1830 and 1835.In the summer of 1838, a violent windstorm caused destruction of property and loss of life.GeographyAccording to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 29.2sqmi, of which 29.2sqmi is land and 0.03% is water.NY 244 is a major east-west highway through the north part of the town.DemographicsAs of the census of 2000, there were 390 people, 133 households, and 107 families residing in the town.
