The Wayne County Emergency Communications Center is the only Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) for all of Wayne County, Indiana, including our county seat of Richmond. Our Communication Specialists work around the clock answering both emergency calls to 9-1-1, and non-emergency administrative calls for service for all three disciplines; law enforcement, fire, and emergency medical services.
Our Communication Specialists go through required training and classes, covering the basics of call-taking and dispatching, including Emergency Medical Dispatching (EMD) so they can begin instructing callers how to render care to the sick and injured prior to an ambulance arriving on the scene. And each Communication Specialist must meet minimum training hours each year to keep certifications and qualifications active and current.
Our call center averages over 40,000 9-1-1 calls each year, 65,000 non-emergency calls, and enters nearly 87,000 calls into the CAD (computer aided dispatch) each year. We serve the 69,000 citizens (37,000 of which are in Richmond) of our county that spans nearly 400 square miles.
