Dr. Chang graduated #1 in his class at the University of Southern California School of Dentistry with highest honors in academics and leadership. He received his medical degree from Louisiana State University School of Medicine where he went on to complete his internship in General Surgery and residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Out of over 220 applicants only 3 doctors, including Dr. Chang, were selected for entry into L.S.U.'s prestigious Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery residency program in 1991. During his residency, Dr. Chang received extensive training in the field of reconstructive and cosmetic facial surgery. Dr. Chang is board certified by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and is currently licensed by the California Board of Dental Examiners and the Medical Board of California

Oral and maxillofacial surgeons are dental specialists who are trained to treat disorders of the jaws and related facial structures. Prior to becoming an oral and maxillofacial surgeon, one must first complete dental school and receive a doctorate degree in dentistry (D.D.S.). An oral and maxillofacial surgeon must then complete either a four-year or six-year accredited residency program to become a certified specialist. An oral and maxillofacial surgeon who completes a six-year program will have received a medical degree by completing medical school, and will have completed a one-year medical internship (usually in general surgery).

The scope of oral and maxillofacial surgery practice includes the diagnosis and medical or surgical management of diseases, injuries, and structural abnormalities of the jaws and related facial structures. The range of treatment that an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon can provide depends on his level of training and experience.
