For nearly 165 years, the University of Wisconsin–Madison has demonstrated its ability to help solve the most pressing challenges facing society. As leaders in interdisciplinary energy research and training future engineers and scientists, UW–Madison and the state of Wisconsin are uniquely poised to meet the energy challenge ahead. The world, our nation and communities throughout our state needed energy yesterday, need energy today and will need energy tomorrow. We imagine the day when those energy needs are met by sustainable alternatives and clean energy replaces fossil fuels.

The Wisconsin Energy Institute (WEI) at the UW–Madison is leading the way toward this new and innovative energy future by collaborating with industry leaders, scholars, scientists and engineers across traditional research boundaries to make transformative energy discoveries a reality. Guided by an overarching commitment to American energy independence and environmental stewardship, our integrated research will produce an even larger suite of clean energy strategies to diversify how we generate useful energy, store it upon demand, and improve how society distributes, uses and conserves this valuable resource.
