More about Wolfe's Neck Farm Teen Ag Program

The Teen Agricultural Crew runs off the steam of our motivated, hardworking and inspired youth. These local teens choose to spend their summers laboring outside to not only grow food but to empower each other to develop skills they will carry with them when they leave the farm.
The Teen Agricultural Crew is a group of teens (ages 15-18) working together to grow food at Wolfe's Neck Farm. Crewmembers are involved in all aspects of growing crops and raising livestock for various markets including food pantries and other local sales.
In addition to supplying much needed fresh local food, the Teen Crew members participate in educational opportunities around the state of Maine. They visit and learn from local farmers, tour Maine's food relief systems, volunteer at food pantries and participate in leadership trainings.
This is the second year of the Teen Ag. Crew, and this season we are growing food on one acre of our preserved farmland. Crewmembers are responsible, as a team, for developing a farm plan and implementing it. This involves creating a business plan and a field plan, preparing the soil, planting seeds and seedlings, managing crops as they grow, weeding, managing pests, some more weeding, harvesting, cleaning and packing produce, and helping to maintain and build healthy soil. The Crew learns the basics of sustainable food production and land stewardship.
Additionally, the Crew is responsible for raising and managing livestock including our sheep, cattle, chickens, goats, turkeys and putting up hay for the winter. These amazing teens provide educational opportunities for our younger (and older!) visitors to learn about food production.
